Have you ever wondered why people from different places speak, think or celebrate in such different ways? The answer lies in culture.
The aim of the Piramid project is to provide tools for understanding and recognising its value. In short, culture is the set of beliefs, values and behaviours that shape the way we live and relate to each other within a society.
But what do we really mean by beliefs, values and behaviours? Let's take it one step at a time to find out together.
Beliefs are ideas or opinions that a group of people share and consider to be true, for example, the importance of family or what is right or wrong.
Values, on the other hand, are the fundamental principles and beliefs that influence individuals' behaviour, such as honesty, respect, freedom, etc.
Finally, behaviours are the way people act: from eating habits to the gestures we use to greet others.
These three elements are at the heart of culture and define the way people interact within a group.
Of course, it is not always easy to distinguish where culture begins and ends: we often take it for granted because we experience it every day. However, there are certain aspects we can pay attention to in order to recognise it better.
Why is it important to know them?
In an increasingly globalised world, it is essential to recognise that not everyone shares our values or beliefs. Being aware of this allows us to relate better to those we perceive as “different” and to reduce cultural misunderstandings and discrimination.
In Piramid's courses and teaching materials, we have tried to put all this into practice, providing concrete examples and useful tools for understanding culture in a simple and immediate way, so as to facilitate dialogue and mutual understanding.
